Easyship presents itself, according to its own website, as multi-carrier shipping software with 550+ courier services and a global fulfilment network (easyship.com, as of 2 September 2026). Karl is built the other way around: maximum depth for DACH and the EU, with regional carriers like Internetmarke (Deutsche Post Warenpost) and Austrian Post supported natively.

Your own carrier contracts instead of reseller rates
Global platforms typically work with bundled, brokered shipping rates. Karl is not a reseller: the carrier always bills you directly. DHL Paket runs on your own DHL business customer contract (GKP) with the API connection from Karl's shared API, Warenpost via your Portokasse, and DHL Express, UPS, FedEx, DPD and Austrian Post with your own account. No tool-owned pricing layer in between.

Extended-area surcharge protection before the label
Karl checks UPS, FedEx, DHL Express and DPD extended area surcharges before the label is printed. If Karl detects a surcharge and another of your connected carriers serves the route without it, Smart Routing switches to that carrier, and the surcharge does not arise (from Karl Pro). Whether and how Easyship handles extended-area surcharges before the label is best verified directly with the provider.

EU hosting, data protection, support in German and English
Karl runs on EU hosting (IONOS Berlin), data is stored encrypted in the back end (AES-256-GCM), no tracking and no cookies; your shop data is deleted on uninstall. Support in German and English. Built in Bavaria by a real Shopify merchant: co-founder Stephan Wittmann runs the shop alpen-werk.de himself.

Can I migrate from Easyship to Karl?
Yes. You connect your carrier accounts to Karl and set up your routing rules, then run both tools in parallel and turn Easyship off after a pilot phase. Karl has no contractual lock-in, so you can switch at any time.
Do I need my own carrier contracts for Karl?
For most carriers yes. Karl is not a reseller. The one exception: Deutsche Post Warenpost runs via your Portokasse, with no contract at all. For DHL Paket you connect your own business customer access (GKP): only the API contract is replaced by Karl's shared API. DHL Express, UPS, FedEx, DPD and Austrian Post use your own account.
When is Karl a better fit than a global tool like Easyship?
When your shipping is centred on DACH and the EU and you want to ship on your own carrier rates rather than brokered reseller tariffs. Karl plays to its strengths with regional carriers, extended-area surcharges and EU data protection.
