Shopify shipping apps compared 2026: which app fits a shop shipping from Germany or Austria

by Stephan Wittmann · · 9 min read

A Shopify shop in Germany or Austria has three routes to a shipping label: Shopify Shipping through Shopify’s own carrier account, an app for a single carrier (for DHL, the official “Post & DHL Versand” app or easyDHL), and shipping platforms for several carriers such as Sendcloud, Shipstation, Easyship or Karl. Which Shopify shipping app fits depends on three questions: which country you ship from, whether you hold your own carrier contracts, and whether one carrier is enough. You will not find a ranking here. Instead, each app comes with what its Shopify App Store listing actually says, with source, as of 5 October 2026.

Disclosure

Karl is our product: KYTH. Systems builds one of the apps in this overview. Statements about all other apps come from their own Shopify App Store listings, the providers’ websites and the Shopify Help Center, each with a link and retrieval date. We read the listings in their German version. We do not quote other providers’ prices. They change, and the current figures are in each listing.

How to choose a Shopify shipping app

The Shopify App Store lists more than a thousand apps in its shipping category (Shopify App Store, shipping category, in German, as of 5 October 2026). Many of them do other jobs: tracking, pick-up points or shipping rates at checkout. This overview covers apps that create shipping labels. Five criteria matter.

  1. Country of dispatch. Shopify Shipping exists for certain locations only, and not every app connects the carriers you use from Germany or Austria. Check that first.
  2. Contract model. There are three: Shopify’s account with the carrier, your own contract with the carrier, or rates the app provider has negotiated. This decides who invoices you for postage.
  3. One carrier or several. If you only ship with DHL, you do not need a platform for many carriers. We work through the numbers in Multi-Carrier vs. Single-Carrier.
  4. Language of interface and support. The listings name the app’s languages. Not every app on this list has an English interface.
  5. Destinations and sales channels. Shipments to non-EU countries need customs documents. If you sell on marketplaces as well as Shopify, you need an app that brings orders from several channels together.

How Karl answers these questions in detail is on the page Karl compared, with six questions to ask before you pick an app.

Shopify Shipping: what Shopify brings itself

Shopify sells shipping labels directly in the admin, through Shopify’s own accounts with the carriers. According to the Help Center, what you get depends on your fulfilment location. The list names the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. For Germany it shows DHL Paket and DHL Express Europe. Austria and Switzerland are not on the list (Shopify Help Center, setting up shipping labels, in German, as of 5 October 2026).

For DHL in Germany, Shopify states that shipping with DHL Germany is domestic only and that international destinations are not supported. The services offered are DHL Paket and DHL Kleinpaket. The rates are based on Shopify’s DHL account, so you need no contract of your own. DHL pick-ups cannot be arranged in Shopify (Shopify Help Center, DHL Germany, in German, as of 5 October 2026).

Labels can be bought one at a time or in bulk. Shopify mentions return labels for shops whose default location is in the United States; the page does not mention them for other locations. Discounts vary by Shopify plan (Shopify Help Center, shipping labels, in German, as of 5 October 2026).

Fits if you ship from Germany within Germany, have no DHL contract of your own and are happy to work in the admin. Limits: no contract of your own, DHL Paket and DHL Kleinpaket domestic only, nothing for shops located in Austria or Switzerland.

Apps for one carrier: DHL and Deutsche Post

Post & DHL Versand (DHL’s official app)

The developer is DHL, based in Bonn; the app is available in German and English. According to the listing you need a valid business customer contract with DHL Paket. The listing names several shipping accounts, labels for domestic and international orders one by one or in bulk, tracking IDs sent to customers and additional DHL services. It lists Deutsche Post, DHL Paket, Internetmarke, Packstation, Paket International and Warenpost as compatible (Shopify App Store listing, in German, as of 5 October 2026).

Fits if you hold a DHL business customer contract and ship with DHL and Deutsche Post only.

easyDHL

The developer is 247APPS from Koblenz; languages are German and English. According to the listing, easyDHL creates shipping labels one by one or in batches and sends tracking information to customers. It adds optional return labels, customs documents, delivery notes, invoices, pick and pack lists, a barcode-based shipping workflow, automatic printing and a rule set for choosing the DHL product. The listing names all DHL and Deutsche Post products, domestic and international (Shopify App Store listing, in German, as of 5 October 2026). Which feature belongs to which plan is on the provider’s website (as of 5 October 2026). The listing text does not say whether you need a DHL contract of your own; ask the provider.

Fits if you stay with DHL and Deutsche Post and want documents and packing lists from the same app. How it differs from Karl is on the page easyDHL alternative.

Shipping platforms for several carriers

Sendcloud

The developer is Sendcloud from Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The app is available in Dutch, English, French, Spanish, Italian and German. The listing offers more than 170 carriers such as DHL and UPS, at Sendcloud’s rates or your own. It lists Deutsche Post, DHL, DHL Express, DPD and UPS among the compatible carriers, plus delivery to the door, to pick-up points or on the same day, tracking emails and a returns portal (Shopify App Store listing, in German, as of 5 October 2026). Sendcloud’s own website says you can ship at its pre-negotiated rates or upload your own contracts (sendcloud.com, as of 5 October 2026).

Fits if you want many carriers from one source and would like to start without a contract of your own. More: Sendcloud alternative for Shopify.

Shipstation

The developer is ShipStation from Austin, Texas. The listing names English as the only language and notes that the developer offers no direct support in German. According to its description, Shipstation brings together orders, inventory and returns from several sales channels, among them TikTok Shop, Amazon and Walmart, offers discounted rates or your own with more than 200 shipping providers and names UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL Express and GlobalPost among them; its “compatible with” list shows Australia Post, FedEx, Royal Mail and UPS (Shopify App Store listing, in German, as of 5 October 2026). The listing does not name DHL Paket, DPD or Austrian Post; whether they are connected for your location is a question for Shipstation.

Fits if you sell on several marketplaces and work with an English interface. More: Shipstation alternative for Shopify.

Easyship

The developer is Easyship; the address in the listing is in Newark, Delaware, in the United States. The app is available in English, French, German, Spanish and Dutch. Easyship describes itself as a platform for e-commerce shipping with pre-negotiated rates and the option to link your own courier accounts, shipping rates at checkout, automatically calculated duties and taxes, and branded tracking. It lists DHL, DPD, FedEx and UPS as compatible (Shopify App Store listing, in German, as of 5 October 2026).

Fits if you ship to many countries outside the EU and want duties and taxes calculated automatically. More: Easyship alternative for Shopify.

Karl: depth instead of breadth

Karl is our own app, and it takes the opposite route: few carriers, more depth for shipping from Germany and Austria. It connects seven carriers: DHL, DHL Express, UPS, FedEx, DPD, Austrian Post and Internetmarke. Karl does not sell postage. You use your own contracts, and the carrier invoices you directly. Details are on the pages DHL Shopify integration, Deutsche Post Warenpost and shipping from Austria.

  • Scan a barcode, get the label in under 5 seconds, on every plan.
  • From Karl Pro: a check for extended area surcharges with UPS, FedEx, DHL Express and DPD before every label.
  • From Karl Pro: smart routing by weight, destination, goods value, Incoterm and country of dispatch, and bulk label printing for several orders.
  • From Karl Enterprise: HS code check and customs documents for shipments to non-EU countries.
  • Server and database in Berlin, billed in euros through your Shopify invoice.

Where Karl does not fit:

  • The interface is German only. Support answers in German and English.
  • Seven carriers, not hundreds. If your carrier is missing, a broad platform is the right choice.
  • The Start plan with no monthly fee (€0.25 per label) ships domestically only: from Germany with Warenpost and DHL Paket, from Austria with Austrian Post. After 1,000 labels in 30 days, Start creates no further labels until the period ends. EU and EFTA come with Pro, worldwide with Enterprise.
  • Without a carrier contract of your own, only Warenpost through Deutsche Post’s Portokasse remains. DHL Paket needs a business customer contract, UPS your own UPS account (approved via “Mit UPS verbinden”, connect with UPS, plus your account number), FedEx an account number, Austrian Post an account of your own.
  • Karl is built for Shopify. It is not a console for many marketplaces.

Everything else is on the product page of the Shopify shipping app Karl.

How this overview was put together

On 5 October 2026 we read the Shopify App Store listings of the apps named here, the linked provider pages and the Shopify Help Center, and took over only what is stated there. Star ratings and review counts are left out on purpose: they are daily figures and say little about whether an app fits your shop. We have not tested the third-party apps ourselves. For Karl, the statements come from our own product. If a provider changes its listing, the listing applies.

Frequently asked questions about Shopify shipping apps

What is the best shipping app for Shopify?

There is no single best app for every shop. Three things decide it: the country you ship from, whether you hold your own carrier contracts, and whether one carrier is enough. If you ship from Germany within Germany only and have no contract, Shopify Shipping is often sufficient. With a DHL business customer contract and DHL only, a DHL app fits. For several carriers, look at shipping platforms such as Sendcloud, Shipstation, Easyship or Karl.

Do I need a shipping app at all, or is Shopify Shipping enough?

Shopify Shipping is enough if your location is on Shopify’s list and the services offered there cover what you send. For Germany, Shopify lists DHL Paket and DHL Express Europe; labels for DHL Paket and DHL Kleinpaket are domestic only according to Shopify and are billed through Shopify’s DHL account (Shopify Help Center, as of 5 October 2026). For your own contracts, further carriers or packing-station workflows you need an app.

Is Shopify Shipping available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland?

In Germany, yes. Shopify’s list of fulfilment locations names the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain. Austria and Switzerland are not on it (Shopify Help Center, as of 5 October 2026).

Do I need my own DHL business customer contract?

It depends on the route. Not with Shopify Shipping, where billing runs through Shopify’s DHL account. The official app “Post & DHL Versand” requires a valid business customer contract with DHL Paket according to its listing. Sendcloud offers its own rates or yours according to its listing. Karl needs your business customer contract for DHL Paket; Warenpost works without a contract through Deutsche Post’s Portokasse. All as of 5 October 2026.

Which Shopify shipping app supports several carriers?

Shipping platforms. Sendcloud’s listing names more than 170 carriers, Shipstation’s more than 200 shipping providers, and Easyship lists DHL, DPD, FedEx and UPS as compatible (Shopify App Store, as of 5 October 2026). Karl connects seven carriers: DHL, DHL Express, UPS, FedEx, DPD, Austrian Post and Internetmarke. The official DHL app and easyDHL are built around DHL and Deutsche Post.

What is the difference between your own contracts and the provider’s rates?

With your own contracts you sign with the carrier yourself and the carrier invoices you directly; the app only creates the label. With the provider’s rates you buy postage through the platform and need no contract of your own. Some platforms offer both according to their listings. Which one pays off only shows when you compare your own carrier price list with the platform’s rates for typical shipments.

Which of these apps have an English interface?

According to the Shopify App Store listings (as of 5 October 2026), “Post & DHL Versand”, easyDHL, Sendcloud, Shipstation and Easyship all list English as an app language. Karl’s interface is German only; Karl’s support answers in German and English.

What does a Shopify shipping app cost?

There are three common models, often combined: a monthly fee, a fee per label, or postage bought through the platform. Current prices are in each app’s Shopify App Store listing; we do not quote them here because they change. For Karl: Start with no monthly fee and €0.25 per label (domestic only), Pro €79 a month plus €0.09 per label, Enterprise €149 a month plus €0.07 per label, net, billed through your Shopify invoice.
