Sendcloud alternative: how Karl differs

  1. Your own carrier contracts, no postage sold by Karl

According to its own listing, Sendcloud offers more than 170 carriers at its rates or your own: you can buy postage through the platform or plug in your own contracts. Karl only knows the second route. Karl sells no postage; it is the routing and printing layer on top of your own DHL, UPS, FedEx or DPD contract. The carrier bills you directly, at your negotiated prices.

  2. Surcharge check before the label

From Karl Pro, Karl checks before every label whether the delivery address is in a remote area with a surcharge for UPS, FedEx, DHL Express or DPD (Extended Area Surcharge). If Karl detects a surcharge and another of your carriers serves the route without it, Smart Routing switches to that carrier. General surcharges such as energy or fuel surcharges sit on every shipment; no app can avoid those.

  3. Depth rather than breadth: 7 carriers for Germany and Austria

Karl connects seven carriers: DHL, DHL Express, UPS, FedEx, DPD, Austrian Post and Internetmarke. Smart Routing decides by weight, destination, goods value, Incoterm and country of dispatch which carrier gets the shipment. On top come scan-to-label in under 5 seconds, bulk label printing from Pro and customs documents with HS code checks in Enterprise.

  4. Pricing model: base price plus label, through Shopify

Karl has three plans, billed in euros through your Shopify invoice: Start with no monthly fee (€0.25 per label, domestic shipping only), Pro €79 a month plus €0.09 per label (Germany, EU and EFTA, with surcharge protection and Smart Routing), Enterprise €149 plus €0.07 per label (worldwide, customs). Each plan has a monthly cap. You pay postage to your carrier, not to Karl. We do not quote Sendcloud prices; the current ones are in its listing.

  5. When Sendcloud remains the better choice

If you need a carrier Karl does not connect, want to ship more than Warenpost without a carrier contract of your own, or need an interface in a language other than German. Sendcloud names more than 170 carriers, platform rates and further languages in its listing (Shopify App Store, as of 5 October 2026). Karl has seven carriers, and its interface is available in German only.

“Above all, we have been delighted with shipping to non-EU countries since we started using KARL. Particularly helpful: before creating the label, the program checks whether the customs details are complete and correct, and actively flags missing or incorrect information. As a result, we always have valid customs documents: the customs declaration and the commercial invoice are created reliably and automatically. Since then, our shipments to third countries have cleared customs noticeably more smoothly and without errors, which used to cause us problems regularly. The support also deserves a mention. Whenever we had questions, we got quick, direct and competent answers from the development team: noticeably personal support instead of an anonymous ticket system. A clear recommendation from us, especially for anyone who regularly ships outside the EU and wants to simplify customs clearance.”

Common questions about the Sendcloud alternative

What is a good Sendcloud alternative for Shopify?

That depends on what bothers you about Sendcloud. If you ship from Germany or Austria on your own carrier contracts and want to see surcharges before the label, Karl fits: seven carriers, postage billed directly by the carrier, surcharge check from Pro. If you need a very large number of carriers or platform rates without a contract of your own, a broad platform such as Sendcloud remains the better fit. Our blog post “Shopify shipping apps compared 2026” gives an overview of further apps.

What is the difference between Karl and Sendcloud?

Sendcloud is a broad shipping platform: its listing names more than 170 carriers, Sendcloud rates or your own, delivery to pick-up points and a returns portal (Shopify App Store, as of 5 October 2026). Karl goes for depth rather than breadth: seven carriers for shipping from Germany and Austria, own contracts only (Warenpost without a contract via the Portokasse), a check for extended area surcharges before the label and scan-to-label at the packing table.

Can’t I use my own carrier contracts with Sendcloud too?

Yes. Sendcloud says on its website that you can either ship with its pre-negotiated rates or upload your own contracts (sendcloud.com, German page, as of 5 October 2026). The difference from Karl is not that own contracts are possible, but that Karl sells no postage at all and focuses on a few carriers in more depth.

Can I migrate from Sendcloud to Karl?

Yes. You connect your carrier accounts to Karl (UPS by authorising Karl in your UPS account plus your account number, FedEx with your account number, DHL Parcel via your business customer portal), run both apps in parallel for a while and then switch Sendcloud off. Karl is billed through your Shopify invoice.

Aren’t Sendcloud rates cheaper than my own carrier contracts?

For small shops, bundled tool rates can be cheaper because you don’t need to hit minimum volumes for own carrier rates. Whether this is true in your case is easiest to verify by comparing both the tool rates and your direct carrier price list across a representative sample of shipments.

What does Karl cost, and how does the pricing model differ?

Karl Start has no monthly fee: €0.25 per label, domestic shipping only, up to 1,000 labels per 30 days. Pro costs €79 a month plus €0.09 per label, Enterprise €149 plus €0.07 per label, each net through your Shopify invoice, with a monthly cap and a 14-day trial. Postage is never included; your carrier bills that. We do not quote Sendcloud prices because they change; the current ones are in the Shopify App Store listing.

Which surcharges does Karl check before the label?

From Karl Pro, the extended area surcharges of UPS, FedEx, DHL Express and DPD: Karl checks the delivery address before the label is booked. Karl runs no such check for DHL Paket. DHL lists no remote area or island surcharge for DHL Paket on dhl.de (as of 5 October 2026); your own contract is what counts. Karl cannot avoid surcharges that sit on every shipment (energy surcharge, toll and CO2 surcharge, fuel surcharge).

Does Karl work without my own carrier contract?

For getting started, yes: Deutsche Post Warenpost runs via your own Portokasse, no carrier contract at all, already on the Start plan with no monthly fee. For DHL Paket you need your own DHL business customer contract (GKP) but no API contract, as Karl provides the connection. For UPS, FedEx or DPD you need your own carrier account; Karl is not a reseller: the carrier bills you directly. We help with onboarding.

Which carriers does Karl support?

DHL, DHL Express, UPS, FedEx, DPD, Austrian Post and Internetmarke, DACH-focused. EU+EFTA from Karl Pro, worldwide from Karl Enterprise.

Is Karl available in English?

Karl’s interface is available in German only. Support answers in German and English. Sendcloud lists six languages for its app: Dutch, English, French, Spanish, Italian and German (Shopify App Store, as of 5 October 2026).
