How do I print shipping labels in Shopify?
There are two routes. Shopify sells shipping labels itself through Shopify Shipping; for a location in Germany, Shopify lists DHL Paket and DHL Express Europe; according to Shopify, labels from DHL Germany (DHL Paket, DHL Kleinpaket) are for shipping within Germany only and are billed through Shopify's DHL account (help.shopify.com, pages on setting up shipping labels and on DHL Germany, in German, as of 5 October 2026). Or you use a shipping app such as Karl with your own carrier contracts: install the app, connect your carriers, connect your printer. After that you scan the order barcode and Karl prints the shipping label.
Can I print Shopify shipping labels without a carrier contract of my own?
Yes, with Deutsche Post Warenpost. In Karl it runs through your Portokasse, with no carrier contract needed. This already works on the Start plan with no monthly fee: you pay €0.25 per label to Karl and the postage from your Portokasse balance. DHL Paket needs your own DHL business customer contract.
How fast is scan-to-label?

Do I have to open every order individually?
Not from Karl Pro. With bulk label printing you tick several open orders and Karl books the labels in one run, instead of you handling each order individually. The app calls the feature “Stapel”.
Which printer: do I need a thermal printer?
You don't need a special printer. Karl connects your printer through the Print Companion. A thermal label printer is common and works well, but it isn't required: labels print just as well on a regular printer.
Can I print automatically when payment comes in?
Yes, with the Auto-Print on Paid add-on. As soon as Shopify marks an order as paid, Karl generates the label automatically and places it in the Print Companion. You no longer open the order by hand: just print and pack.
Which carriers can I print labels for?
From Karl Pro, all 7: DHL, DHL Express, UPS, FedEx, DPD, Austrian Post and Internetmarke. Karl Start (no monthly fee) covers Warenpost and DHL Paket for shops in Germany and Austrian Post for shops in Austria, domestic only. Printing runs on your own carrier contracts.
