“A clear recommendation from us, especially for anyone who regularly ships outside the EU …” Official FIBA Store, review on the Shopify App Store, translated from German

Karl is the DACH-focused routing and print layer for Shopify that sits directly on your own carrier contracts, built for shops shipping from Germany and Austria with DHL, UPS, FedEx, DPD, Austrian Post or Deutsche Post, with an English-speaking team. Feature scope, pricing and hosting setup of other shipping apps are best verified directly with the provider. This overview shows what Karl does. For the market overview of Shopify Shipping, the DHL apps, Sendcloud, Shipstation and Easyship, see the post Shopify shipping apps compared 2026.

“Above all, we have been delighted with shipping to non-EU countries since we started using KARL. Particularly helpful: before creating the label, the program checks whether the customs details are complete and correct, and actively flags missing or incorrect information. As a result, we always have valid customs documents: the customs declaration and the commercial invoice are created reliably and automatically. Since then, our shipments to third countries have cleared customs noticeably more smoothly and without errors, which used to cause us problems regularly. The support also deserves a mention. Whenever we had questions, we got quick, direct and competent answers from the development team: noticeably personal support instead of an anonymous ticket system. A clear recommendation from us, especially for anyone who regularly ships outside the EU and wants to simplify customs clearance.”

Does Karl fit your shop? Six questions before you choose

These six questions decide whether a shipping app suits your shop. Below each one is how Karl answers it.

  1. Your own carrier contracts or the provider’s rates?

Karl: Karl uses your own contracts: DHL Parcel with your DHL business customer contract (GKP), and from Karl Pro also UPS (log in to your UPS account and authorise Karl, plus your account number) and FedEx with your account number. Even on the Start plan with no monthly fee, Warenpost needs no contract and runs via the Deutsche Post Portokasse, plus DHL Parcel with your GKP (shops in Germany); shops in Austria use Austrian Post with your own account. Karl is not a reseller; the carrier bills you directly.

  2. Are surcharges checked before the label?

Karl: Yes, from Karl Pro. Before every label Karl checks whether UPS, FedEx, DHL Express or DPD will add an extended-area surcharge, includes it in the carrier comparison and picks another carrier where needed.

  3. Which carriers for Germany and Austria?

Karl: DHL, DHL Express, UPS, FedEx, DPD, Austrian Post and Internetmarke, connected directly, all seven from Karl Pro. The Start plan (no monthly fee) ships domestically: from Germany with Warenpost National via the Portokasse and DHL Parcel, from Austria with Austrian Post.

  4. How fast is it at the packing station?

Karl: Scan the barcode, label in under 5 seconds, on every plan. The USB scale supplies the weight; with the Auto-Print add-on Karl prints without a browser dialogue.

  5. What about shipments to non-EU countries?

Karl: From Karl Enterprise, Karl checks the HS code before every non-EU label and creates customs documents for DDP, DAP and DDU with ETD and Paperless Trade.

  6. How is it billed?

Karl: Through your Shopify invoice in euros: Start with no monthly fee, Pro €79, Enterprise €149 a month, plus €0.25, €0.09 or €0.07 per label (excl. VAT). On Pro and Enterprise label fees are capped at €300 or €500 a month; Karl does not block labels there, and if you reach the cap, get in touch and we adjust it together. Start runs up to 1,000 labels (€250) per 30 days; after that Karl creates no further labels until the period ends, unless you move to Pro; the limit does not apply during the trial. 14 days free, including label creation, once per shop.

For other apps, you will find the answer in their Shopify App Store listing or on the provider’s pricing page.

Coming from Sendcloud or Shipstation?

Frequently asked questions

How is Karl different from Sendcloud and Shipstation?

Karl is a Shopify-native shipping app with surcharge protection before the label: every address is checked for UPS, FedEx, DHL Express and DPD extended area surcharges before printing, and routed across your own carrier contracts, no reseller layer. For the current feature scope of Sendcloud and Shipstation, please verify directly with each provider.

Which shops is Karl the right shipping app for?

That depends on your carrier mix, where you ship from and your volume. If you need a very large number of carriers, broad shipping platforms have the edge; our blog post “Shopify shipping apps compared 2026” gives a market overview. If you ship from Germany or Austria on your own contracts and want to see surcharges before the label, Karl goes deeper: surcharge checks for UPS, FedEx, DHL Express and DPD (from Pro), scale and Auto-Print at the packing station, address validation and, on Enterprise, a log for every shipment.

Which carriers does Karl support?

DHL, DHL Express, UPS, FedEx, DPD, Austrian Post and Internetmarke, DACH-focused. EU+EFTA from Karl Pro, worldwide from Karl Enterprise.

Do I need my own carrier contracts for Karl?

For most carriers yes. Karl is not a reseller: it is a routing-and-print layer on top of your own rates. No-contract entry: Deutsche Post Warenpost via your Portokasse, already on the Start plan with no monthly fee. For DHL Paket you need a DHL business customer contract (GKP); Karl provides the API connection, so no separate API contract is needed. For Austrian Post you need your own account, for FedEx your customer number, for UPS your customer number plus authorising Karl in your UPS account (no API credentials of your own). We help with onboarding.

What does Karl cost?

Three tiers: Start with no monthly fee (€0 a month, +€0.25/label, domestic shipping), Pro €79 (+€0.09/label, DE+EU+EFTA) and Enterprise €149 (+€0.07/label, worldwide). Plus optional add-ons, with all except the eBay Connector included in Enterprise. 14 days free, including label creation; the trial is available once per shop. 20 % off with annual billing on Pro and Enterprise.
