Sendcloud, Shipstation or Karl? Decision guide for Shopify shops

by Stephan Wittmann · · 8 min read ·

Sendcloud, Shipstation and Karl: three shipping apps with three philosophies for Shopify shops in DACH. They all solve the same base problem (multi-carrier shipping) but in fundamentally different ways. This guide helps you figure out which one fits your shop profile before you commit.

The three philosophies in one sentence

  • Sendcloud: All-in-one platform with Sendcloud's own shipping rates as the default and the option to connect your own carrier contracts (from the Lite plan onwards).
  • Shipstation: Multi-channel shipping console (Shopify, Amazon, eBay, Etsy, …), US roots; its own website lists UPS, FedEx, DHL, Royal Mail and DPD among its carriers (shipstation.com, retrieved 2 September 2026).
  • Karl: Routing layer for your own carrier contracts. DACH-focused, pre-label surcharge check, scan-to-label performance as USP.

Sendcloud: when it fits

Sendcloud is the right tool for Shopify shops that want shipping rates "from one place" or prefer an all-in-one shipping provider with bundled rates. From the Lite plan onwards you can also connect your own carrier contracts, but the default are Sendcloud's own rates.

Pricing: Sendcloud offers several tiers by shipping volume (from a free entry level up to enterprise terms), each plus per-label fees; according to the pricing page FAQ, the subscription can be cancelled before the next billing period. Current pricing: sendcloud.com/de/preise (retrieved 2 September 2026).

Shipstation: when it fits

Shipstation is the right tool for Shopify shops that sell on multiple marketplaces (Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Walmart) and need a central shipping console across many channels. Shipstation's website lists UPS, FedEx, DHL, Royal Mail and DPD among its carriers (as of 2 September 2026); whether and how DHL Paket for German business customers and Austrian Post are supported is best verified directly with Shipstation before you decide.

Pricing: Shipstation offers several tiers by shipping volume, quoted in US dollars, with a free trial; according to the pricing page FAQ, the account can be cancelled at any time. Current pricing and carrier list: shipstation.com/pricing (retrieved 2 September 2026).

Karl: when it fits

Karl is the right tool for Shopify shops that have their own carrier contracts (or are moving to them) and sell in DACH or DACH+EU. Karl sits between Shopify and your carriers: a pure routing layer with no own shipping rates.

Strengths:

  • Pre-label surcharge check for UPS, FedEx, DHL Express and DPD extended areas.
  • Smart routing by weight, zone, value, incoterm automatically per order.
  • Scan-to-label under 5 seconds: meaningful speed USP for warehouse ops.
  • Your carrier contracts stay yours. You can switch Karl off without re-onboarding carriers.
  • EU hosting, support in German and English, billed through Shopify in EUR, no reseller.

Where the limits are: Karl is DACH-focused. EU+EFTA from the Pro tier, worldwide customs and DDP depth only in Enterprise. For US-heavy or Asia-heavy Shopify shops, Shipstation is structurally closer.

Pricing: Start with no monthly fee (€0/month) + €0.25/label, domestic shipping only, Pro €79/month + €0.09/label (DE+EU+EFTA), Enterprise €149/month + €0.07/label (worldwide). Every plan starts with a 14-day trial, and the labels in it carry no fee. Annual billing takes 20 % off Pro and Enterprise.
